You can gather up public domain images by interesting artists to help inspire your character and jot down notes of what you’d like them to be able to do. If you think the concept you have in your head isn’t represented by any preexisting classes or subclasses (or multiclass combos), it’s time to get started. Would I actually rather be playing Gotham City Chronicles ? Yeah… this last one might just be for me.Lastly, it’s vitally important to ask yourself… If you have an idea for a street-wise detective with a flair for creating exciting (uh, bat-themed) gadgets, maybe you’re actually looking at a new version of Artificer instead of a whole new class. Is this actually a subclass? There’s a lot of variety within each major class’s subclasses.Even if the idea you have feels unique, you should still ask… Does this already exist? The 13 official 5e classes already cover a broad range of concepts that can be messed around with even further using feats, multiclassing, and subclasses. That actually brings me to an important point: before you make a whole homebrew class for 5e, ask yourself… This could be as simple as “Batman” (okay, I’ll admit that’s just an Oath of Vengeance paladin with the Unarmed Fighting Fighting Style) or as complex as “a stealth and misdirection-focused half-spellcaster who focuses on frightening their enemies and taking on large mobs of goons” (which, now that I think about it, is also Batman via the Oath of Conquest Paladin). A mob of witches and scoundrels who steal magic and purvey curses. Before you dive into working out the rules for a whole new character class, it’s important that you have an idea in your head of what the finished product will look like. Form a bond with a particular city, and enjoy the benefits of urban life no matter where you travel. The near-destruction of the world granted scattered individuals powers of entropy and annihilation. Clever speakers who learn to influence minds with the subtle power of their voice. Psychic thieves who steal their victims’ memories of being attacked. Warriors who draw upon the power of one of Risur’s fey titans. A traditionally all-female assembly of wandering liberators who savagely punish those who enslave or oppress. A leader who learns to bond with an area, to shield those within and control who can come and go. Ascetics committed to wedding body to weapon have embraced the gun as a symbol that their traditions are still pertinent in the modern day. Tinkerers who know just enough alchemy and mechanics to assemble a suite of personal gadgets for use in combat. An ancient sect that taps the power of nature from alien worlds. Though made up of worshipers of many gods, the Clergy’s foundational belief is that every person has the potential to perfect themselves and ascend to divinity. Students of this roaming camp learn tales and spells about travel. A courteous secret society whose members all connect to a hivemind that lets them control their rage. It's a few months before we release, but I hope these classes might interest you: I love his pugilist and scholar, and am interested to try out his magus sometime.įor the upcoming ZEITGEIST setting book, I wanted to include two new subclasses for each of the setting's seven regions, which fit well with twelve core classes plus the Noble and Savant from EN5ider. Kobold Press has a ton of awesome archetypes in their material, with the largest concentration found in their Midgard Heroes Handbook.īen Huffman (aka Sterling Vermin) makes some good classes, too. Too many archetypes to list, but some of my favorites among their classes include: Mage Hand Press (aka Middle Finger of Vecna) makes amazing classes and archetypes. The Noble is definitely my favorite, and the cardcaster, fatebender, and savant seem cool, while I could take a pass on all the evil/edgy classes like diabolist and blood weaver. Some of the classes I like more than others. I’m playing a tactician Noble and love it.ĮN5ider has put out a number of classes and archetypes over the years. The Noble class published by EN5ider has a good warlord feel to it.
